How to replace MR16 bulb connectors

I'm having a problem with one of the MR16 halogen recessed downlighters in my bathroom. At first the light would occasionally go off and I simply needed to take the bulb out and put it back in again every now and again. Then it started to flicker and has now gone completely. It is not the bulb as I've tried a couple.

Reading about it, it seems it is quite common for the bulb connectors / holders to fail. I think this is the case with mine as it seems a little corroded.

I see you can buy them for less than a pound, but I'm not sure how I replace them? Looking into the recess I can see the wire which the bulb holder is connected to goes through a hole in what I would describe as an upside down can and then I assume it connects to a transformer?

I can probably access the top of the lights from the loft space.

Any advice much appreciated.

You may just be able to genlty pull on that wire and the transformer will come though the downlight hole.

Or you may need to get friendly with the spiders in your loft.

Just replace the existing lampholder and wires with the new one.

Turn the power off before you start messing around with electricity!

Mr16 has nothing to do with the lampholder thats the lamp size

If its 12 volt its usually a G5.3 which is a lampholder with 2 holes 5.3mm apart then it will be connected to a tranformer

If 240 volt often a GU10 lampholder then its connected to mains voltage

Either way there is proberly a terminal box above the downlighter and usually part of the downlighter, accesssed from the loft or by removing the fitting
