Most single phase motors have two windings start and run. Swap connections to any winding will reverse the motor but not both.
Not all work that way. Some stuff imported from USA had nothing to ensure it went the correct direction and it was pure chance which way it went. Others are in fact three phase motors with an inverter.
As far as I am aware there is no difference between USA and UK on this subject but be aware this is a UK site so you may get wrong answers as a result.
