HP Envy 13 Laptop not booting

Looking at a friend's laptop, model 13-d002na which will not boot, even to BIOS..

When the power button is pressed, it lights up but nothing else happens. A few seconds later it goes out, apparently powered off. No screen, no beeps.

We tried a 'hard reset' by removing the battery/ power/ holding down on for 30s and reseating the m.2 SSD and wifi card but there's not much else obvious to try.

Can anyone suggest the next steps?

Hi,

After the 'hard reset', did you try starting the laptop with only the charger connected, and without the battery?

...and is there any display at all? Can you connect an external display and see if anything shows on screen?

yes, tried with just the AC without battery connected - no difference
just tried the HDMI - nothing showing on the external screen. tbh the power light is only on for 3-4s so doesn't feel like enough time for the screen to show.

no, only lights are the one on the power switch, and a power indicator on the right side of the laptop. both illuminate for a few secs then off.
there's also a separate light when the AC is plugged in.

yes, disconnecting the CMOS battery was my next thought, but it's sealed at the battery and a mainboard-out job to disconnect the plug

As the laptops already dead, a snip of a cable wouldn't hurt!
It can always be resoldered later.
...but if the laptop does start after this, then the new battery will come with the cable anyway!

CMOS reset did the trick!!

Used a scalpel to open the sealed battery and prise off the contact. Boot with that disconnected started the fans and threw some BIOS messages before starting Windows.

Good to hear.

Have seen similar on a fairly new ThinkPad which made me think of it.
Probably nothing wrong with the CMOS Battery. System just needed a nudge into life (That is the Technical Term).
