When I switch on the dimmer switch on one room the other room dimmer goes off!. We can't have both rooms lite at the same time, as one must be off before the other one goes on and sometimes this affects the ensuite bathroom where the light becomes very dim. I have checked the wiring, but never seem to get the combination right

How many wires are there at each switch?
Where were they connected to the old switches?
How were the old switch terminals labelled?
How are the dimmer terminals labelled?
How are the wires connected to the dimmers?

Without knowing, everything is guesswork.

From the limited information in your post, my first guess is you might have split the live in and live out connections.

Hi TicklyT
Thanks for the reply .Can I come back to you tomorrow, when I can safley switch off the "leckie" and asnwer your questions correctly?

Also... have you done some work to cause this

eg

did it work fine until you installed new dimmers, something else?

You have got a switched live and neutral muddled up in a pendent or joint box. It may be a pendent that appears to work fine.

Hi lads, here is what is happening:

Room 1 has a dimmer with a normal 60w bulb fitting. It seems to control room 2 which has 5 halogen spotlights and is also a dimmer. You cant switch on room 2 lights without room 1 being on.

The position of the wires in Room 1 are: 1 brown wire in L1, and 2 brown wires in the "C" connection (last connection on right of 3)

Room 2: 1 brown wire in L1 and 2 brown wires in "C"

Both dimmers are metal and are earthed. The blue wires have been housed in a separate connecter box (un-used)

Any advice?

First observation is that you cant have two dimmers on a 2-way circuit unless they are special master/slave types.

But to go back to my basic question

Aha,

so did you make a note of what went into which terminal in the old switch before you changed it?
I thought not.

OK.
Lets make a start-- if you put the old switch back does it all work OK?

..The position of the wires in Room 1 are: 1 brown wire in L1, and 2 brown wires in the "C"..

..The blue wires have been housed in a separate connecter box..

..they did work fine until I fitted a dimmer in Room no.1..

The blue wires will be the neutrals, and appear to be correct (all connected together)

The brown wires are probably permanent live supply, switched live for room 1 lights and another permanent live to the switch in room 2.

The two permanent lives should be together in the same terminal. It is likely you have the permanent live to room 2 together with the switched live for room 1.
