I'd get away with those pads you found then? They were 1mm. I'll order them up. I don't know that I'm brave enough to put a shim in.

The pads will work, a shim will work better.

The shim isn't really much fuss, you just plop some paste down on the GPU, press the shim into it, plop paste on top, and fit the heatsink.

Choice is up to you. Fit a pad or shim to the northbridge too.

Now I'm gonna show how clueless I am - is the northbridge the chipset? I'm still on "bumpy bit on the CPU" or whatever!!

How on earth do you measure the gap accurately? The only thing I can think of is a feeler gauge like you'd use for spark plugs?

Yes, the northbridge is the chipset (part of it, anyway). Big plastic package, no exposed die.

You would indeed use feeler gauges.

Use the pads if you're unsure.
