im checking my nans immersion heater tomorrow she ays she has no hot water. What are the steps to check it and find the problem i have purchased a simple draper multimeter which is basic but im not sure what to tset and how? thanks

a immersion element is about 18 ohms / 20 ohms if it's good.
test it across the two element probe.
check the fuse 13 amp for continuity.
check the stat doesn't just need re-setting.

It would be a good idea to check for a 240v supply!!!!
why don't you get someone in to do it rather than killing her off with a dodgy immersion stat.
read the instructions
you need a range of "AC volts" that includes 240V.
see if there are volts at the switch
see if they are at the incoming terminals under the immersion cap
see if they are on the terminals after the thermostat.
thermostat might have failed open circuit or could have tripped the overheat if it got too hot. in this case the stat probably needs replacing but you may see a "reset" button which could be inside a small hole.
if you have power on all terminals (they look like copper pillars sticking up) then the immersion heater is probably faulty and you need a plumber to change it (the cylinder may be damaged trying to unscrew the old one, and start to leak - especially if it is old. newish cylinders have hard blue or green insulating foam round them, moulded on in the factory.)
turn off power and check that it is dead before you touch anything

I was in maplins the other day and they had a book at about £13 which covered basic electronics in the first couple of pages.
It then went on to become quite advanced about radar, TVs and receivers.
But I thought it was not bad.
There are some small pocket books at about £4 which cover a narrow range of topics, perhaps one on using a multimeter. Henrys Radio might have them.
You are not alone! 70% of people trying to fix boilers cannot use a multimeter competently!!!
