It made quite a lot of noise when I switched it on hope that doesn't indicate something bad
Unnecessary wear and tear. Plus if you switch it off while the shower is actually running it could damage the switch.

The switch is not actually required by the regulations so you use it as you want.
There isn't much benefit switching it off every time.
To say it is for a plumber's or electrician's use only is ridiculous.

You said it was for isolation for maintenance and the OP should not use it.
No. But it is best if you turn off the shower first.
