Oh sorry, I didn’t think to explain because I’m submerged in it and I do sometimes ‘go on a bit’ about my work.

We have OTs, SLTs, Clinical Scientists and, less commonly, Doctors who may have come from university or trained abroad. They come to us for experience of rehab working, as we/I do, in a specialist Rehabilitation service and we have them for one year before they move on to another service. So we train them in our particular field before they eventually settle down somewhere else, in this country.

So just as they are up to speed, so to speak, they leave. I understand why but it’s a shame that we can’t keep them. I also get work experience youngsters passing through who I teach in health care, which is nice because it’s makes me realise that there are many teenage men and women ‘out there’ who are absolutely wonderful.

I guess the few young ones spoil it for the rest, so I shouldn’t really be so disparaging of today’s yoof. But these are generalisations of course. It only takes a few to spoil it for the rest and because they are so vociferous and scummy they stick out like a sore thumb more so..

But we need these good doctors here. These people are very comitted, hard working and have a great work ethic, whereas many here seem to live for the weekend to get drunk and let their hair down.

We DO need them, and they can ALL speak english well enough to communicate effectively.

Saying that, theres many native english who cannot speak english properly. Have you ever walked around some housing estates and heard the aweful manner in which some people speak? using vulgar language etc? These people speak 1 language and speak it poorly. Whereas many foreigners are bilingual and speak 2 or more languages fluently.

I have been into their homes and they may not all speak English but their hospitality has been second to none! Just recently I went to see a Muslim family and the smell coming from the kitchen was just incredible. In broken English the patient offered me a meal his wife was making. Damn those rules which forbid me from taking such an offer. (Possible conflict of interest).

Also, again in Naz’s defence, we must be amongst the most ignorant bunch on Earth when it comes to integrating with others. We speak one language, badly, and when we’re abroad we expect them to know English. If they don’t it must be because we didn’t shout at them down their ear – right?

i would say most GP's are usless regardless of race or nationality! but i'm sure they can speak decent english.

I cant believe someone can be stupid enough to believe doctors in England cannot speak English.
Joe90 you just being argumentative for the sake of it.
If you cannot understand English in anything but an English accent then you are the one with the problem.
I have trouble with the Scottish accent but I dont moan about it , I try to listen more closely.
Perhaps ,next time you are being ignorant in a doctors surgery you should ask them to syringe your ears.

Very few of our neighbours speak good english. Some do, and speak it very well.
But they are all lovely friendly, helpful people, eager to help, offer advice, share their garden produce, etc.

But surely you speak French? I've often found it a two way thing when in France, if you try to communicate in French and dont get frustrated then they will also try their English. After all, if a French man approached you on the street speaking French would you even bother to try to understand?

When I go to France I gen-up on French. It's an insult not to IMO and I believe that the French don't mind if you speak it poorly so long as you have made some effort.

I also found it's not so difficult to learn another language when you are immersed in it. I think I learnt more in the four days I was there on one occasion than a month of listening to tapes.

When I was in Portugal the once, I got chatting to a young girl serving in a shop, doubtless on a small wage. During the conversation I discovered she could speak four languages. It made me feel quite stupid and overpaid. Actually, it was very humbling...

I don't speak French as well as a lot of French speak English.
I'd guess that any French person under about 40 years old can speak, at least, a little English.
I would love to speak French more and better but working on the house all day, all week, there's little time for socialising. There are local classes during the winter, but sadly I'm not here in the winter.
The trips to BMs are sometimes eventful, we manage.
