imperial to metric radiators

If it isnt possible to change the pipework, what is the most common way to replace imperial radiators with metric size radiators, t: when there is no exact match available in length:

Get slightly shorter metric radiators and have pipe extensions to make up the difference
or
Get slightly wider metric radiators and have extendsion pipework running under the radiator?
