Are there any rules/ regulations as to where these must be placed in the system, or are they just there for convienience and a system would technically be OK without them. Does there need to be one on each pipe at the lowest point near the boiler?

Currently I have one on a radiator that is close to the lowest point in the house, (although the pipework goes up to first floor and back down again where the boiler is) and the H/C water has none, but they can be drained through a sink which is lower than the boiler. Is this OK?

You need one somewhere low, that's just sense, but one on each pipe at the lowest point is a godsend when it comes to working on the system. Two drain cocks poking out through an airbrick is very good news!

So I take it that there are no rules/ regulations then, just common sense when fitting them.

no regs, no official rules, but working rules. draining works on gravity only so the lower the better
