Good call - on closer inspection there are two 2c+e coming in and one 3c+e going out - you can't see the 3rd red wire on the picture its hidden behind the others, and the two CPCs from the 2c+e wires are in a single sheath. I suspect the other 2c+e is going to the burglar alarm as that's on the same circuit.

Doing it correctly requires a dry liner box in the ceiling, and the smoke alarm fixed to that instead, just shoving the chock block into the gap is bad practice.

If the screw holes on the alarm mounting plate line up with the dry liner holes - I'll consider it!
 
Round Aico bases fit a square dry-line box.

But more to the point, the Aico bases have a wiring compartment anyway which would easily accommodate that ceiling wiring.
