does anyone else have lots of installations where IR is poor whereas continuity etc is good?
i seem to get it all the time
is there something im doing wrong?
lamps out ..trannys disconnected...

Are these existing circuits you're testing for additions, alterations or for reporting purposes or are they new installations carried out by yourself?
If existing, what's the condition of the wiring? It could be anything, poor insulation, connected items, even a faulty meter.

:?:

IR poor/continuity good.

They don't necessarily go together.

the only thing i can think is that maybe i forgot to take the
fuses out of the 2 FCU's. would that make much difference?
i'll check again in the morning

IR - define "poor"?
IR - check for neon, check for capacitor network?

IR is the leakage between the length of conductors across insulation.
Continuity is merely that of the said length of conductors.

Sadly, this is absolutely normal for many installations.

The much misunderstood insulation resistance test is actually a measure of separation of conductors.

Suspect damp, dust and debris before you get thinking about damage or the mythical 'breakdown of insulation'. Direct shorts usually indicate damage, which can often be tracked down quite accurately using your continuity tester. Values in the region of 500,000 Ohms will involve a more laborious, systematic process of dismantling the circuit concerned.

Where/how are you doing the IR test? Are you sure that absoltely everything is disconnected & unplugged.
The mains input filter on a computer hangs between live, neutral and earth and will scrog your IR measurements - you'll stand a good chance of scrogging the PC too, if you're not careful!

Is their any surge protction systems still connected, this can cause low IR values.
