The main thing is that Ireland is at peace and fingers crossed it lasts.Yes splinter groups still exist on both sides. But its one hell of an improvement on the 1970s for all of us.

Im not here to educate you John D....Peace broke out because of(in part) Martin Mcguinness or despite him...take your pick.opinion seems to be 50/50...we will agree to disagree it would appear. As I said.peace broke out.Thats the main thing.Personally I think MM possibly saved more lives than the Ira took.We will never know one way or the other for sure.Enniskillen was a bomb too far even for IRA.....but fuk me the british govt dealt out some **** for decades to the Irish catholics...

So why were you asking
Because Doug99 claimed MM gave up his IRA activity due to 9/11, but he apparently gave up in 98, he also claimed funding dried up, if I claimed such "fact" I would back it up with some credible evidence, my own opinion is the same as Brigadier, he realised the game was over and settled for a fat salary, car and hobnobbing with royalty, but that is only an opinion not a "fact"

You seriously think MM was motivated by hob nobbing with royalty...Rofl...Maybe just maybe he was not the monster you believe...

MM grew up in a form of apartheid where gerrymandering and internment were the norm...where as a catholic you had no vote no job no house owning and no hope for your kids..how low would you go to protect your family if a copper kicked your door in and locked you up for months with no trial.....oh. and you had tried years of peaceful protest but were shot at!

IRA leader Martin McGuiness died last night , apparently from a rare Heart condition which is surprising as a lot of people were of the opinion that he didn't actually possess one.
He did have a heart.full of forgiveness for his brit tormentors. He brought peace in the end.

It is said he went into politics when he realised the error his ways, (earlier methods) but in denying what he'd done, that suggest cowardice, or untrue redemption.
Did the British ever apolgise.....oh sorry its never wrong when a british soldier shoots anyone!

For me, the turning point was 911. I remember commentators on TV saying "the IRA are now untenable" and they were proven right.

I think it also important to understand the true situation in Norn' Oirland at that time . . . and it wasn't the situation portrayed by the BBfukkinC.

Who are the "British"?
British soldiers shot and bombed very few in NI compared to the ira.
The ira have never apologised for their misdeeds choosing instead to blame "the british".
British soldiers were only drafted in to protect catholics when the troubles began.
As vinty says the ira set the possibility of peace back decades.
The attacks on protestant businesses not connected with any security (british) establishments was on an unprecendated scale.
Usually never reported by the terrorist supporting bbc..
