Recently had some kitchen work done by wickes.

Part of the job involved fitting some additional wall sockets.

Which was installed like this

The cable runs along the horizontal along the floor behind the skirting before it comes up and across into the socket as shown.

Im not a spark but i thought cabling for sockets was supposed to be done in such a way that a safe zone is created either directly horizontal or vertical to the socket.

Anyone able to clarify if this is correct or not?

No it is not legit.

Get Wickes to come back and re-do the installation correctly. If they start to argue tell then you will be contacting the Building Control officers in the local council about new sockets installed in a way that is not compliant with BS7671

Do you happen to know the other end of that cable goes to ? Hopefully it does not go to a junction box under the floor.

That's not right either.

Don't let them change it to this:

Cake mix  the clue is it the title ...... Capping

Kindest regards,

Dave

1) Capping does not provide the necessary mechanical protection.

2) How would you earth it anyway?

As already pointed out above it’s not correctly installed and the picture with the blue and red lines is correct but as for the comments regarding capping and running behind the skirting board you guys are wrong.

The building regs has a zone of protection that is 6 inches from and wall, floor or ceiling and in line vertically and horizontally with any fixed outlet and these are the only acceptable places to run buried cables and they must be covered by an RCD.

Capping be it metal or plastic isn’t designed to protect cables from drilling, it’s designed as a fixing for cables and at most protect the cables from a plasterers float and it doesn’t need bonding to earth.
