Hi All,

Never used a router before and I've bought the Katsu one from Amazon. It doesn't come with any useful diagrams showing how to set it up so I thought I'd ask here.

I've bought a rebating bit (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07SJ4YBVL?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_0&th=1) which is 35mm wide. This is about 2mm or 3mm too wide to fit through the bottom of the base plate on the router unless I fit it through the base plate first. All I want to do is create a 1/4" wide by about 12mm deep rebate in a piece of 43mm square pine so I can fit a piece of glass and putty it in. Am I missing something here or is there something I need to learn?

Cheers
Daz

this would fit into the router , through the baseplate - upto a mark , to say how far to safely use the bit

ANY photos - might help
is this a plunge base

Link to the Katsu router

have you watched any videos on router -0 which direction to use the machine in, on the wood - how to safely use the machine - they can be quite lethal, literallyyou

just a random youtube video

Thanks very much for the reply. It's not a plunge base. What I'm getting confused with is I've got this large cutting bit with an attached bearing giving the offset I need for the width of cut but I don't know how I set the depth of cut!

Katsu were recalled for dangerous electrical connections.
I received this after buying one on eBay .

Hazard

The product presents a serious risk of electric shock as it possesses poor internal build quality and breakdown occurred before the test voltage was applied, meaning the product has poor electrical strength. The product is adequately earthed and the insulation on the wiring can break down over time, exposing live wires which are accessible to users. The product also requires improvements to labelling and documentation.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008.

Corrective action

The import has been rejected at the border. Update: 02 May 2023: The product has been recalled from end users by Super Smart Services.

the Katsu one from Amazon.
Those are cheapo lightweight affairs designed for trimming laminate or doing very shallow cuts with small diameter cutters.

I've bought a rebating bit
That is a substantial 1-3/8 inch cutter on a 1/4 inch spindle - something which is far too large for that spindle size, and certainly not suitable for a low powered handheld trim router.

All I want to do is create a 1/4" wide by about 12mm deep rebate
You don't need a massive cutter such as the one you have for that.
A 3/8 or 1/2 inch straight cutter would be plenty. You don't need any bearing - use the guide(s) supplied with the router.

but I don't know how I set the depth of cut!
Depth is set either using a plunge base, or for the smaller ones there should be a collar or clamp around the whole thing so you can adjust how far the cutter sticks out from the base. This is done after installing the cutter.
How far the cutter sticks out from the base = the depth it will cut.

General info on routers here: https://www.raygirling.com/routtips.htm
Like all woodworking machines, routers can be dangerous devices.

That router bit is not suitable for that router. A trim router is designed to be used with small diameter bits for trimming and other lightweight jobs. For a 1/4" wide slot you need a 1/4" wide cutter. Never take a cut that is deeper than the diameter of the cutter, and a bit less is safe, so for 12mm deep take 2-3 passes. slowly. Does the katsu have an sort of fence? if it doesn't it can't do the job unless you rig something up to create a fence. Make sure the cutter is rotating so that the cutting force is pulling the router into the fence.

As others have said, routers can be dangerous because of the very high rotation speed. If that cutter comes loose, or shatters because of vibration because it isn't deep enough, bad things can happen.

For slotting and rebating you ideally need something a bit better. My pick for a small router would be https://www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-pof-1400-ace-1400w-1-4-electric-router-230v/790kk as it's bosch
