Am in the process of getting quotes to fit out my kitchen ( I am in the NW).

The room is approximately 3.3m Square and will require removal and replacement of 18 units with 16 going back in (larger cooker).

In addition I have asked for the ceiling to be boarded over the walls skimmed and tiling between the floor and wall units.

I am happy with the cost of the units and new appliances.

Is a Labour and Materials (plasterboard and plaster only and possibly some plumbing) charge of £5200 and a time frame of 12 - 15 working days (2 men) in the ballpark.

Would the job take that long? I will be away on holiday for a fortnight while they are working so will be unable to keep an eye on them.
The room is approx 3.3m sq and I foresee no particular problems that they would need to overcome.

At 10 days work and allowing them £500 for materials it still works out that at a daily rate of £235 each. Is this the going rate for the North West?

I have used the firm before and am very happy with their work but in the past they have asked for around £125 a day each. I have asked but didn't get much of an explanation other than they have to pay tax...

Is this a fair quote? Or perhaps they don't want the work?

Plasterers certainly charge that. Kitchen fitters are less. I did speak to someone who had one round for £80 a day and did an excellent job.

For location purposes , I am 10 minutes from Chester

get another quote, you did say you are getting some
I'm getting rather fed up waiting for the day to come when you realise that you're not a moderator.

Start making a contribution, or just **** off like you did before.

You do have the optional

Yeah, and you have the option of not pressing any buttons.

I don't know if it helps much but I just got my kitchen done a couple of months ago - it's 3.3m x 3m. I got my old units taken out, new units in (12 in total), the electrics done and the walls between base and wall units tiled and the floor laid with plywood and it took them 5 days. Can't help much with cost because mine was an all inclusive cost for units, appliances and labour but one guy originally did quote me £2600 for labour - and that didn't include the tiling or laying the floor with the ply.

geezer - by way of comparison we charge circa £6000 labour per your average* kitchen installation - SE area. 7 - 10 days is usual.

We always suggest to clients that when they're getting quotes their first port of call should be B&Q. Once they've got B&Q's specification they should use a copy of this to get alternative quotes - that way they're getting like-for-like comparisons. Why B&Q? Most folks (for no apparent reason) seem to 'trust' them as being honest (not cowboys). I cannot recommend them however for the actual installation work (all subbed-out so little quality control) ... I've given-up counting the number of B&Q installations that we've been out to to put right.

I think it's a BIG, BIG mistake to be absent during this type of installation; daily inspections of the progress of the work (whilst the guys are there working) will minimise bodging, poor installation, cheating and keep them on their toes - even if you've been happy with their previous work.

* average also means probable gas re-route, new electrics, new tiling and 'straight-forward' plumbing mods. Anything that deviates from this cost more - much more in many instances.

Symptons post is full of good advice there, such a good idea to get a proper spec done so you can compare "apples with apples".

If you are away when the install is done and a problem arises (as they often do) how would it be resolved. Much better to be about to address any such queries (even if you are not living in the property). If you are going to leave them to it you could be cheeky and ask for a bit of a discount as they won't be tidying up as much at the end of each day. They will defo be saving on time.

With regards to "how much, how long" this is often a bone that gets chewed a lot with clients at the end of the job trying to work out what the contractor has made as a daily rate.

Once you have had your quotes in and compared them and made your choice you should concentrate on making sure the install is how you want it with regards quality of workmanship etc and not be too worried about how long it has taken.

With regards to B&Q as advised previously don't touch their install service with a 20ft pole.

got to agree with symptoms on the being absent one. Ive fitted kitchens for people in the past and from a fitting poiint of view its always handy to have someone around, because there always eems to be little questions along the lines of which way would you prefer that crop up. Any little thing in a kitchen thats not right will drive the wife mad forever and therefore make your life a misery!

Thanks for the considered replies most of the views are very relevant.

I will put the job on hold till I get back.. Better that and suffer a few takeways rather than have an unhappy kitchen user mither me for an age......... :(
