which is the best way to cut worktops to avoid the surface splitting

Set up a straight edge and run a router along it. As long as the router bit is sharp, you should get a clean cut line.

I second noseall - upside down with a cirsular saw always works for me.
Make sure it's well supported as that stuff is HEAVY.

Also watch out which way your blade runs into the laminate on the curved edge.

So long as the blade is cutting INTO the laminate you'll be fine. If it ever cuts OUT of it then you're into splinter-hell.

Sound advice for any routing job too.

Worth running a router along the cut edge too to give a lovely square clean cut.
