Knobs!

Went round me Ma's today to help with a few things and added to the blinking list...

The garage door knob was hanging on by a thread and snapped when I turned it.

Trouble is, the bar is badly corroded and will not come out.

So... I've had a search on Ironmongery Direct for a turned oak door knob.

Can you still get these, or something similar?

Standard knob you see day to day. I see them daily and I'm told others see them as well.
Not sure about wooden but plastic and metal along with ceramic available.

Here is a link you can't look at as an example.
Shaft size is standard size but check.
You can cut if too long.

If it's an external knob, stainless or brass will last, but brass will tarnish. You can get some nice black iron knobs that look in keeping for a garage.

If you want, you can paint the spindle before fitting to fend off rust, it will scrape off where it goes into the knob.

The ones retained with a grubscrew are stronger, because pulling on one knob is resisted by the knob on the other side. It won't pull the rose off.

I usually get my stuff from IronmongeryDirect, who have a vast range.

You can probably hammer the old spindle out with a drift, after squirting WD40 in, but this may damage the lock or latch. What has it got?

Thanks, Wayners. I've looked for oak ones like the original, but not found anything like it. There are oak knobs, but all the ones I've found are strictly internal only.
I did consider it might be an internal knob that's just had lots of coats of gloss over the decades (the house dates from the mid 1950s), but then I have seen the same at other houses used externally.

Cheers John. The one that came off in my hand had a spindle with threaded holes and the knobs on each side screwed into it.

With the help of WD, I managed to get both the yellow handle complete with most of the spindle out of the rimlock, and the yellow knob off the spindle. However, the green knob has the remains of the spindle stuck fast inside it.

I have got a new spindle on the yellow handle, but it is an undrilled/ tapped one. This doesn't matter because it's a tight fit.

I guess the old spindle and knob were imperial and the metric ones are a smidge bigger?

So I have the choice of reusing the yellow handle on the outside (it was on the inside) and fitting a new knob on the inside, or getting a matching pair.
