laptop with no serial port

Hi guy's,

As mentioned I need to add a serial port as when using an service checker for some strange reason USB is always tricky and yesterday we tried for 2 hours checking port settings and ending up failing. It's a known issue with this piece of kit and the manufacturers engineers simply won't use it on USB for that reason.

So my HP laptop hasn't got a serial port -is there anything I can do or add which will give me this urgently needed option??

Just be aware that USB/Serial adaptors don't always work correctly. Sometimes there is a timing issue and the devices won't handshake properly.

Yeah, I have had problems with USB-Serial convertors in the past. You can get a PCMCIA to USB convertor, don't know if they are more reliable though? http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=47115&doy=4m5

Just to bring you up to speed..

I read the Maplin link and thought "download the drivers for this device" This got me thinking it was more than just a lead. I pondered could the problem be that I'm setting it all up then switching it all on?

So I plugged in the lead and let the laptop 'find' it. THEN I pluged in the device (Checker from Daikin air conditioning) and volia works first time every time!!
