I want to change my ceiling rose to a spot light and successfully did so friday - until I turned the light off and all the lights went out. Since then I havent had any light and have read and read and am utterly confused.

This is what I started with

Advise please?

I initally put all the blacks and blues together, the earth together, the red and browns together but like I say it tripped the lights?

It will do. As you can see from your switch piccy, one of the blacks is sleeved red to indicate it is actually a switched live. The question is, which "black" at the rose was sleeved red/ is the switched live?

You can see in the 1st pic the black is a live. He should of put some tape on the black when disconecting the wires. You need a tester to find the live black again.

Looking at the original rose (again), it appears some red tape was wrapped around the switched life but had undone itself, most probably due to the heat rising.

(And I hate it when folks sleeve all the earths with one sleeve. And twist the ends. GRRrrrr!!)

You also have a blue and brown wire in your photo, this connects to the permanent live, neutral and earth.

(should have clicked edit, )

This is a life saver! So I have now bought a multitester and identified my live.... so the blue in my rose pendant goes to the? and the brown to the?

Wahey! I have light!!! thank you so so much!!!

One prob is that the light switch (on the wall) doesn't switch off.... simple job?

The brown wire(s) to your new light need to connect to the switched live (black-with-a-red-sleeve) not the permanent lives.
