My smoke alarm system is flashing red every few seconds. It is normally green all the time. Any idea what this means. It cant be batterys as it is wired into the mains. I have pressed the button and it works ok.
Mains smoke alarms have back up batteries. Some are regular 9v ones, some are rechargeable lithium cells. These and the alarms themselves have a defined lifetime.
Your flashing may indicate one of these issues (or something else)
Once you have found out the model number you can read what the lights mean.
I've only looked at one but it seens to say teh red light flashes every 45 seconds to show normal operating mode.
Some models have hush(silence) mode. When in this mode the red light flashes every 10 seconds but the alarm will automatically come out of hush mode after 10 minutes.
The instructions have a helpline number too - that may be easier than asking on here. Do tell us what the answer is though!
It's not uncommon for red light to be flashing approx every minute, if functioning correctly, under normal operation and green light will be on also (as stated above) there are a few models that do this.
Why is it all of a sudden a concern?
Is it something that you have only just realised happening or something that has just started to happen.
You should get an intermittent bleep/chirp approx ever 5s, if the bats are low and unless you have been on holiday and had power cuts or power off, with units still connected, the bats should be lasting around 5 years some more!
