Just had a log burner installed. Round the front of the fireplace opening, the installer put a black metal angle to cover the gap where the brickwork was cut into, to open up the hearth. Looks fine, except he used CT1 silicone as the glue to fix it to the brickwork. This gets very hot, especially above the burner, and we get a strong silicone smell. I've seen there are 300 degree and 1100 degree CT1 silicone sealants but I've seen one example which is ' Fire seal and bond 1100 deg white' yet says 'not suitable anywhere that is direct contact with high heat such as a woodburner'. Would any instant grab type fixer be ok? It has to be something which doesn't give off fumes when hot !

I would remove the angle iron, scrape off the remaining sealant and re fix with concrete screws (no plugs) into the brick. You will need hss or cobalt bits for tne metal. Paint the heads of the screws with a fire resistant paint. Knock the cost of the bill.

I've removed the metal parts. Wasn't easy. Removing the silicone from the back of the metal was hard work. Strong bladed sharp knife, then using wire brush on drill to remove the remains. There's no room to screw the metal back on, it's only 30mm and anything wider would not look right. A grab type works well as long as it doesn't smell after being warmed for a few hours. The smell from the silicone built up the longer the burner was on, and I know the metal (painted black) did get very hot

What paint is on the metal ,sometimes this has to cure (like a new oven) to get rid of the smell .

Can you not use fixings on the inside of the brackets? They would be less intrusive there.

You could try a flexible flue sealant like Vitcas ,which was used around flue joints on my log burner with no smell .

Found what the problem was - the piece of cement board which was stuck to the bricks which was the top of the opening had 'sticks like sh1t' grab adhesive used on it. After I removed it I could see where the heat had affected it and caused the fumes - it had turned yellow. Moral of the story - use the right stuff !
