Loud pull cord switch

If you still want to mount it in the loft and pass the cord through a bush you could use a couple of eyelets that leather workers use for belts.

They come in two parts, a male and a female, which sit either side of the leather and are squeezed together with a special pair of pliers.

In your case you could drill the hole in your ceiling and glue a male piece on both sides of the plasterboard, pass the cord through and re-attach the hand grip. Job done and just a neat little bushed hole to show for it.

I discovered by accident that having a heavier knob on the end of the cord makes it quieter. A lot of the noise is the undamped richochet as the switch clangs over.
It's a quieter gentler click with a porcelein loo pull knob instead of the normal lightweight plastic thing.
Also if you miss it in the dark it doesn't swing about so irritatingly.
