This isn't a new method but not that common. If the counter batten is felted over then the areas between take the majority of water.

Lol. Is that where you put them when you tile a roof?
The thing is, the OP wants a slate roof.
It's a flatty, anything other than a proper flat roof finish is a bodge.
Same place as of you where tiling the roof.

You mean fixing poorly detailed or constructed properties?
Zinc or lead standing seam for example rarely looks out of place IMO.
And very common on many older properties, I guess you only get to see the felt ones though.
Probably, you're relying on felt which is gonna be penetrated hundreds of times.
