M5 closure

The build up of traffic over time would have caused the gridlock, and the presence of the police and curious motorists. It certainly wasnt your presence that kept the traffic moving!

Funny how the traffic came to stand still when dumb plod took charge of guiding the traffic.
They were far more interested in getting statements off people that had seen nothing.

Mind you i saw nothing either.

Yeah you are right, the police always take statements from people who dont see anything

And your knee jerk reaction is to let the drivers through so they can be hit by his falling body, and run over the corpse?

might have been a pile up with people swerving to avoid the mess as well.

There is no way this could happen. The M5 Avonmouth bridge has no high structures to jump off onto the roadway. The bridge is virtually flat, with only waist high guard rails either side, and a low crash barrier in the middle.

The bloke was threatening to jump into the river, which then washed the twaat away. No danger to cars.

The cops like playing at heroes, and get a power trip out of closing roads for no real reason. Years ago, following a fatal accident, they'd scrape up the body and let the traffic flow. Now its a big drama, which closes roads for hours, and causes mayhem for thousands.

The guy jumped.
4 lanes on that bridge ... Bags of room.
When trafiic is heavy the going can be stop start walking pace stuff, I have seen no crashes during such times (used to be regular user)... And that with no police officers directing.
Very poor road management, some families stuck for 6 hrs on the motorway... Not all journeys are just for fun - hospital visits etc etc Lines of communication must be kept open or circumvention plans made and acted upon quickly.

M58 was closed westbound yesterday morning, between Jct 4 and 3, due to a single car having an accident. Going eastbound I saw the car was on its roof but there were no othr vehicles around except 5 police cars, 2 council lorries with cones and a man cutting the grass at the side of the hard shoulder!
Returning westbound over 2 hours later it was still closed and signs said to follow diversion signs to rejoin. Diversion sign indicated to turn right at the roundabout into Skelmersdale, (one way city, go in and you need a search party to come and find you! ). No more signs so had to drive by instinct as to best way to go, you could tell others were just as lost because they were going in circles around the roundabouts. It took me over half an hour to find a way back to the motorway and that was by accident as I was heading for Maghull.
Heard later from our driver that the driver from the car had been discharged from hospital shortly after being taken there by ambulance.
Any other time and you never see a police car on that road, suddenly there are 5 and the strange thing was no officers were on view!

We get the occasional  shooting and knifing around here and the Police close off whole roads or sections of roads for a very long time.

Same thing when there is a car accident (with a fatality usually) - including the other side of dual carriageways.

And I recall that when a hand grenade was found in someone's military collection recently, houses for hundreds of yards were cleared - what is the blast radius of a small hand grenade?

Remember when that biker was shot on the m40 ? - closed for days it was

And exactly what gets found with those bizarre finger-tip searches of the road? Anything?

They must do this under some general H&S reason - they probably don't want to take any chances for which they could be critised - rather than actual need or proper assessment of the danger. And/or it may be so that as much evidence as possible can be gathered to help secure a conviction if need be? But they certainly don't give a second thought to the rest of the public

Probably just some high ranking officer wanting to cover himself, rather than any other reason. So he shuts everything down

No matter what you say about the methods that the police use, they succeed in the important cases, for example tracking down the July 2005 bombers and their support network.

If you don't like being held up on the motorway on a bank holiday weekend, then don't drive on the motorway on a bank holiday weekend.

In case you did'n't realise, thats what motorways are for, we are all paying for these roads and are entitled to use them any day, bank holiday or not. It is up to the motorway police to keep them open and not close them for the slightest reason. It must be understood that the remit of the police force is to serve the public, not a politically correct commisioner.

Since you've decided to be pedantic, I'll point out that you're wrong.

The only people allowed to use motorways are those with a driver's license, and that's not an entitlement.

It is up to the motorway police to keep them open and not close them for the slightest reason.
You, and many others, write as though you were involved in every decision ever taken and that you know all of the factors involved. Clearly you don't, so wouldn't it be nice if you showed support for the people whom you expect to protect you and your property and to bring to justice anyone who commits a crime against you or society?

It must be understood that the remit of the police force is to serve the public, not a politically correct commisioner.
That's a popular and pathetic platitude.

Every vote you've ever cast has been for a government that puts the police in a position of both power and responsibility, and most of the time they perform brilliantly. For them to be perfect is too much to expect.

Perhaps I should make clear that I have lived thro' the time when the Police did serve the public, and when the Chief Constable started as a bobby on the beat not fast tracked tho' University. That's the same period when the NHS was run by Matron's not CEO's with an army of penpushers.
I could go on. Don't accuse me of being pedantic. I have seen at first hand the disaster that modern politicians have made of our once great country.

So has half the population.

Times change. Get over it. Do you not like having more money, more luxury, more opportunities, more international travel, more variety in supermarkets, central heating, abundant computers, TFTs, HDTV, microwave ovens, faster and more reliable cars?

Or don't you have any of those?

I could go on. Don't accuse me of being pedantic.
You're pedantic.

I have seen at first hand the disaster that modern politicians have made of our once great country.
Ah yes, it's always the fault of the politicians. So you've never voted for any of them? :D
