well worth fitting one! Magna clean and a good powerflush can work wonders on an older system.
Get the tape measure out and you will be fine, you'll always get a little play with the compression valve anyway (few mm if not pushing fully home)
After you have made the first cut you will probably find one or both pipe ends move under gravity unless they are well-clipped above and below the cut.
Re-measure after making the first cut.
It is a good idea to clip the pipes firmly to the wall, as you will be putting a certain amount of stress on them when you unscrew the cap to clean the magnet.

If u hold against tho it will be ok when u take the cap off.
