My 3 year old house has a gas pipe outside near the water tap, supposedly for connecting a barbecue.

All of the gas barbecues I've even seen come with a regulator for a bottle and make no mention of mains. Can I use one of these BBQs on the mains? Do I need the regulator or is that just needed for a bottle (hobs don't have regulators do they?)

The gas pipe outside ends in a brass screw fitting with a blanking plug in it. The pipe goes into the kitchen where it goes through a quarter turn brass tap and joins onto the gas pipe that leads to the hob and boiler.

I have moved this to plumbing section as we have corgi-plumbers who may know the answer.

Nver heard of this before. Sounds a bit dodgy to me. You may have to get a corgi man to connect up each time you want a bbq :p

Under no circumstances attempt to connect any LPG (bottled gas) appliance to natural gas supply.

If you find a natural gas barbecue appliance, this could be connected to your gas point, provided the gas point has a suitable socket (to match the plug on the barbecue. You will need a Corgi reg. bod to set this up properly.

micropoint ;)

These are well rare in the UK.

Not many at all. If it doesn't look cosher, it's gonna be a botch job.

Try looking at these guys - they know what they are talking about.

You could give them a call, they're looking into mains gas appliances right now, so you may be able to get some good info off them.

Thanks for all the replies.

The most useful one was whoever mentioned "natural gas". Previously I'd been googling for "mains gas", but using "natural gas" instead opened up a whole new seam of information to mine. in particular - http://www.komar.org/bbq/mm/convert/ which should have all of you corgi people up in arms

The "fitting" on the wall is a 22mm threaded brass opening going down to a 15mm copper pipe at right angles to it. It currently just has a threaded plug in it.

I reckon with the rarity of nautral gas BBQs and not wanting to blow myself up drilling out jets - i'll just go for a cheap charcoal one and have done with it... Unless someone qualified wants to modifed an LPG BBQ for me?

Cheers,
Alan.

Have a look in the manufacturers instructions....many cooking appliances are permitted to operate on both lpg and nat. gas and even supply you with a set of injectors for each. If it says you can then you are ok if not then no obviously Supply should be on a micropoint though, which it probably was before the micropoint fitting was unscrewed to cap it off.
With regard to the site, it's american. Safety no object if it assists you in stuffing your face

I made a few of these gas barbacues for people about 20 years ago

At the time you could get very few gas barbies and i was working for a firm which made one off appliences and industrial/commercial gas burners control systems.

All the time we were being asked for commercial barbies and pig roasts but an ever increasing number of people wanted larger type coal effect fires and indoor and outdoor gas barbies, nothing was availiable then as it was all new.

Also the conversion of most appliences can easily be done if you have the knowlege to do it--i still have my gas flow conversion charts with exact drill sizes on them.

I would bet this kind of work isnt covered by Corgi but i await to be proved wrong

It doesnt mean there has been a bodge job done, it most likely means that someone wanted a Nat gas outlet outside.

Alan if you tell me the input of your barbi i can tell you the exact equivelent hole size--drill size and the company which is still going today a very small specialist company who will get or drill you the exact equivelent jets/injectors
