Hello,

What wood is best for a bath shelf? I have seen different people use different wood some water resistant others not...

What would be best and if it's needs a sealant of some sort what would people recommend?

Thanks

James

Solid pine comes initially to mind.....easy to work and take a routed or planed edge well. A finish could be paint or varnish - whatever you have in mind. The usual sheds have various sizes, planed and sanded and ready for alteration.
Don't consider MDF

Thank you again.

I presume solid pine is the same as normal pine white/red pine?

I was looking at something which will show off the wood grain and won't take alot of work to maintain. What would you recommend?

Thanks

James

All timbers have their own patina and beauty, it all depends what you can find. For a bathroom, maybe polyurethane varnishes have it over Danish oil etc......let's hear what others say.

are you talking a shelf to fill the gap between bath end and wall
or a raised shelve for shampoo bottles in use ??
if its likely to get wet or have wet things stand on it your better with glass metal or porcelain

Thanks it's for a shelf while the other half is in the bath to have candles on and read her kindle and a drink...

To give you an idea something similar to this

I also looked at clear polyurethane varnish (since I painted the garage floor with polyurethane paint) but wad told Danish oil was better since I haven't varnished anything before I am looking for guidence.

Thanks

James

Brilliant thank you it looks like they have a good range of wood care available!

Would any exterior varnish or yacht varnish do it as I have found out she would quite like walnut now to go with the cabinets and I notice that Sadolin don't do Walnut in the yacht varnish :(

Thanks

James

Sure, you'll be fine with that.....available in silk or gloss finish.
Whatever product you choose though, have a trial run on some scrap material......wood finishes and colours can vary a bit!

Thank you I have just been reading about marine wood sealant is this the same thing just under a different name?

Thanks

James

This is a modern, up to date sealer that is particularly effective on hardwoods found in marine applications.
As expected, it works well but is probably only available from specialist suppliers, such as International Paints.
For your needs, I think the likes of Homebase or similar could fit the bill!
John :)

Thats great thank you. I agree Homebase would suit I just wondered as it turned up in my Google search.

I did also speak with Ronseal as well and they have said their interior varnish will do but I am sceptical due to it not saying waterproof / resistant on it anywhere. They have however pointed me to Colron Danish oil which says it can go over another oil so if I were to stain the wood and then put this over the top would that work or would that just make everything worse?

Thanks

James

Danish oil will go on top of other oils, but not varnishes, of course....have a practice on some scrap though to see if you get the finish you want.
John :)

Thanks I will be doing I am just trying to find wht will do the job whie keeping the other half happy lol

Thank you for all your help

James
