My son's Makita combi drill dhp453 about 2 years old started smoking and got really hot. I took it apart and found the following metal bits in the case as shown in image. I presume they are from the motor?

It looks like copper, maybe from the commutator.

Thanks, I suspect your correct. He's decided to buy a new one and I'm gonna repair this for my tools.
