I've got a Maki and the hex key on the bolt has gone so it's stuck.

Thinking I grind down either side and get a wrench on the actual bolt OR get a screw extractor.

Are there any other options for me to get the bolt off easily or is it this primitive?

A picture if you can please!
Some screws are so hard you'd never drill them so grind down a couple of flats if possible!
John :)

Use knipex twingrip for striped screws.

They are on my shopping list

Or

Vampliers screw extraction

Blackened Allen screws are often very hard.
If it was mine, I’d try hammering an Imperial key slightly oversize in, but failing that I’d grind some flats very carefully and use an adjustable spanner to shift it.
John.

cured this exact problem with a makita last year
if your careful no visible damage
i used my 12v bosch angle grinder
2 slots side by side 1-2mm apart worked into each other and big screwdriver

you can replace with the correct length hex bolt and a washer no need for a replacement just make sure the washer is small enough and sits inside the ring off nipples

you can cut quite deep as the bolt and ring are discarded, i only lost half a nipple

other ways to remove allen key bolt
correct allen key and lever hard sideways to force key to grip the bottom off one side and the top off the other
select a screwdriver that will fit corner to corner and tap hard if it grounds before going tight grind a bit off the blade point
if it wont go in deep enough grind an edge

A pain those because the outer bit spins round so probably easiest to just grind it off.

The new version with the tool less change is much better when replacement time comes.
