can somebody help me with worthless piece of water heater/boiler thing. installed in a new build about 8yrs ago it keeps burning new thermostats i keep buying @ £50 a pop for the timer & booster. bought the last 2 a year & half ago this time burning through wires, thermostat & also causing white plastic cover 2 bubble. fortunatly tripping out on main fuse box b4 setting the place alight.
obviously some other fault 2 keep burning out thermostats. can anyone shed any light on this................,pleeeeaaase?????

I would say the sparky forum is a better bet as it sounds like wiring cable size and fuse rating is an issue.

What temp is the element set at and how long do have it on for?

Are the elements full of limescale? do you have a lime scale reducer fitted?

When have you replaced the elements last?

If it is burning new equipment I would say it was the wiring.

I would agree likely to be a wiring issue, however;
burning new thermostats i keep buying @ £50 a pop for the timer & booster
what exactly burns out?

If your Megaflo is worthless junk I would be happy to come and disconnect it and take it away, at no cost.

Sounds like your sparky has used 1.5mm cable instead of 2.5mm and it must be Heat resistant cable as well!!

which thermostat are we talking about?

heating controls only need to be 0.75mm infact, as were only talking about (usually) 3amps.
2.5 only required up to spur.

If I postulate that this is a direct cylinder, with two immersion elements, and therefore needs cable that will support 3kW @ 240VAC, then we'll have a full set of random guesses, and then all we need to do is wait for andykelly to provide more information.

thanks 4 ur replys guys
after using boost 4 just 60mins this is wot has caused thermostat 2 literally melt, although element fine etc.
havin isolated electric have found there is 240v goin in2 wall unit ( timer & boost) which is also now out of order, which i guess why over the years thermostat kept tripping out
so now i presume i need a wall unit (a grasslin qe7) + thermostat, but still not sure why this has occured.neighbours have had similar problems

If I were you mate I'd avoid using the hot water and get an electrician out to sort this asap.
This could potentially be very dangerous as this is a point where electricity and water mix.
+ you mention melting.

yeah no danger of that, not had hot water 4 a couple of days so got electric 4 boiler cut of from main fuse box.
need 2 buy parts 2mrw (hopefully) & got sparky mate comin round 4 a look
cheers

BEWARE>>>!!!!
after delving a little deeper, must warn anybody else who has a grasslin qe7 water heater timer that they have been recalled due 2 serious faults and could be a very serious fire hazard
they r a german company but u can contact them on freephone 0800 408 0048 where they say they will replace old product. will try myself 2mrw
