Hi - our 2005 machine has been faultless until this morning - when it blew the electric trip switch for the house mid way through on a normal wash. I have confirmed it is the machine which trips out the circuit breaker after about 20 seconds. no warning lights were seen and I regularly clean out filter etc Any thoughts welcome please before we reluctantly ditch it or open my cheque book to repair man. Thanks

8 years isn't bad for a washing machine, you could throw money at it and have it repaired only for something else to go wrong next week if you know where I'm going.
Your trip is probably an RCD which detects an imbalance in the live and neutral wires i.e. it is leaking current to earth.
This could be as simple as a water leak, the heating element going or a problem with the motor - you'll have to see how much a repair man will charge to come and have a look and weigh this up against the price of a new machine.

If you are competant to do so try disconnecting & insulating the wires to the heater & try again if it works ok or progresses further through the programme without tripping the rcd then the element is faulty.

Many thanks for your replies - I have tried the rinse programme and everything works fine - ie pump, drum rotation etc. Then tried a normal wash, machine filled ok, drum turned to wet and as soon as the heater element kicked in - that's when the fuse trips. Tonights plan is to safely isolate/ disconnect (and insulation tape to the wire connectors) the heater element to see if it'll carry on through the programme. I will update in due course - thanks
