Mini Digger Hire - do you need a licence?

I'm going to add in that it is definitely worth seeing how much it costs to hire a man WITH a digger. I did this recently and he cost me £250 for the day, all in (outskirts of London). I would suggest if I had hired a digger and done it myself it would have taken me all weekend, at least. He was pretty much done by 2pm.
