My car is due for MOT on 7th May which is a bank holiday. The nearest day I can get it tested is Friday the 11th May as I am on holiday the week before and am at work all week from the 8th.

I'm not sure if the car HAS to be tested on or before the date on the old cert, is there some kind of 'grace' where they give you a couple of weeks to sort it out? Or do the people in the DVLA assume that you never go on holiday and don't have a job?

I don't think there is any grace about it. No MOT is no MOT.
Get it done early & keep it Legal.

You can get an MOT cert post dated 1 month beforehand of the due MOT date, no excuse really.

That's OK, as long as I know I can get it tested in the next few days before going away.

Thanks a lot for the advice

Please remember that once the MOT has lapsed the only legal place you can drive it to a pre-arranged MOT test at a test station (you must also be insured.)

could have done it when you got back, provided the car is booked into a garage then its legal to drive without current mot to the given garage but must be within reasonable distance
