The big problem is that Islam rules many of the third world countries where males are expected to take several wives and have as many children with each one as possible.

It may seem heartless to say this but all the aid that the west sends means that a lot more of these people are now surviving to puberty. This mean that they can then produce more offspring and this cycle continues.

At the time when the Koran was written, the death rate from natural causes would have been much higher.
