I can't find a long router bit for use with a hinge template.

I'm using a JCB RO2100 1/4 1/2 inch router.(I have a sleeve so can use either).

It doesn't plunge far enough to reach the wood at maximum plunge depth.

I've been looking for hours and asked AI many times but I can't find one cheaper than £40.
Ideally want one under £15.

All searches default to quarter inch which are usually too short. I think I need at least 70mm shank .

Any ideas?
Thanks

do you mean lock???

a lock will be around 3" needed hinge about 2mm needed in depth

you can only safely have around 12mm shank showing so around 12mm greater than the collet to full depth
in other words a cutter 12mm out the collet that will be say 2mm above the base will add 10mm to the total depth the cutter will cut so a 2.5"/63.5mm cutter will give you 73mm deep with multiple plunges and passes

It's for the hinges. It's because the template I got is quite thick and my router doesn't plunge that deep. So I'm going to return the that template and ordered a thinner one so hopefully that will solve the issue

I can't believe that any hinge jig would need a deep bit!

Worktop bit kits tend to have a longish bit.

If the template is timber, router it to a thinner profile :sneaky:

I don't hang doors that often but when I do, I just use a palm router with a fence. I then use a chisel for the top and bottom of the hinge. That said, given that I am doing it freehand, if I had fit the hinges with rounded corners I would make a jig.

This is one of my jigs for use with my palm router - simply clamps to the door edge. With a 5mm cutter in anything but the hardest wood the corners square off just by tapping the hinge in.

It's because my router is maybe for bigger jobs with wider half inch bits. I did get a quarter inch converter but it didn't plunge far enough.
Anyway sorted now, l just bought a palm router instead, perfect for smaller jobs
