I’m having plans drawn up to extend above the garage. I’d like it to be brick, rather than render, but know I can’t get the original’purple curtain wire’. How well does brick stain work? I’m concerned the bricks will still look a different colour. To add to the dilemma this will most likely be the third coloured

brick used as a lighter colour was used in 2012 on the dormer. The white diagonal fascia will be removed.

Google brick matching.
A close up picture of the bricks could help identifying them.
Anyhow, at least for a few years, newly laid bricks will be slightly different from the rest of the house.

When we did our extension I took down an original external skin (that was becoming internal) so that I could use the bricks on the new front elevation. I also paid a fair premium for white sand.

The end result? It wasn’t worth the effort - the new bricks used at the rear were a perfectly acceptable match, and the mortar colour was still diferent enough to see what was extension and what was original.

Save yourself some stress and accept that in this instance close enough will be good enough!

The secret with matching any masonry is to try and make the new work not shout out at you. And it's not just about matching the bricks. One should always strive to make the mortar joint colour, as well as the style of pointing, match too. I've never seen brick tinting, but I understand it can be a decent solution - done well.
