new flat odd smell

Just moved into a new flat and there is an odd smell coming and going. The basement is rammed full of junk and is being cleared out and has a similar smell so Im hoping its that, however the smell became really strong after i ran the taps in the kitchen for about 10 mins as i was cleaning brushes, so know Im not so sure, any ideas? Please help.

If the smell got stronger when you ran the taps, I would say that it's a drain problem.

Does the basement have a little window or an air intake? Is there a gully near that window/intake?
If so, then you probably have a blocked gully.

Two things to try:

1. Buy some caustic soda crystals and use them on the gully according to the instructions on the pack/bottle.

2. Buy some Mr Muscle dual action foamin' and a-cleanin' wotsit stuff, and use it in the sink according to instructions on the bottle.

If the smell doesn't go then come back here and try to describe the smell.
