Newel post attachment

Hi all,

Just a quick one we're in the process of building a mezzanine floor with a staircase and we're going down the official route with building control etc, I am just wondering now that I've done it will building control be happy with the top newel post of the stairs connected to the joist like this:
Its simply sitting flush to the joist with 5x 6mm screws

I'm aware that the usual method would be to notch it into a joist, but the joist was just a bit too far back in this case. Its also properly jointed to the outside stringer with a mortise and tenon joint. Thoughts please?

Can you put a couplle of noggins between the post and the joists below floor level

Not sure but looks dodgy to me. You're asking a heck of a lot from those screws.

Is your top step deeper than those below it, due to the mezz floor being further away than it was designed for? If so that's a trip hazard.

Could you put a second joist alongside the one you've screwed into and notch the post into that?

No all the steps are the same the staircase was bespoke manufactured, the joist is in the position its in because thats the size of opening the staircase manufacturers had on their plans, its just a few cm off.

That sounds like a good plan I can run another length of timber along the whole length of the existing joist and then notch the newel into that, should be ok?

Or would I get away with lag bolts or normal bolts?

I've had a couple of bolts to the floor joists for over 20 years holding mine up.

Thought I'd just crack on and double up the joist and notch it properly, glued and screwed, no stress with the inspection now. Can't really put bolt and nuts through it as the face will be visible, may get some 140mm lag bolts and put them in place of the screws though

Sorry not quite sure what you mean by this

I meant noggins between the joists your blue spirit level is across in post 8 in line with the newel post to stop the joist it is scwed to from twistiing or flexing but now you have doubled up there is probably no need.
