How are newel posts generally fixed? are they just jointed to the stairs/strings or do they go through the floor and bolt to the joists?
This is for an upcoming project on newly acquired house. The old post has been roughly sawn off to about 4 inches and a rough bannister nailed together.
any suggestions?

The staircase string is mortise & tenon into the newel post and not to the floor joist.I would say this is not a job for diy'er to do unless you're experience carpenter, but you can do it this way without taking off the existing newel post as in the picture for one of the type using a Newel Base Connector

If you still have enough timber on the Newel Base, it should be possible to fit a Newel Turning to that. Go here

Picture there shows main components.

Hope it helps.

At the bottom of the page there is a Pdf file, which gives fitting instructions for stair components.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanx for that Breezer. Am new to this Forum, am also impressed. Some are sssooooooo patronizing. its refreshing.

Thanks for the advice.
The old newel post has been roughly sawn off to little more that a 4 inch stump, so not sure if there is enough left to add a turning to it.
I'll keep you posted (no pun intended)
