My next DIY project is replacing naff cheap late 70s horizontal bannisters for new traditional spindle handrail version

You can see the bottom of the stairs and stringer in picture 1 and the newly post I'm getting in picture 2.

From the various videos I have watched on the topic I am thinking (if you look at picture 3) that I cut the stringer back to where the green dotted line is roughly plus a small notch out of the last step as also shown and that the new newel slots in. Is that that right way to go about it?

Also is adhesive and long wood screws into the stringer enough to secure or should there be some sort of floor fastener too in the concrete sub floor?

Would appreciate a steer

If you are ok at joinery and can handle a chisel the more secure fixing would be to house the newel over the existing stringer and snug up to the riser and use foaming glue and screws with timber plugs to cap the holes or timber dowels and glue. This may help...
