Nightlatch door lock metal pin?

Hi all - would really appreciate your advice on this as extensive googling has not helped!

A couple of days ago the door wouldn't close behind me (latch sticking out), when I moved the handle this short metal rod fell out of the lower of two holes in the latch itself (picture). The lock seems to be still working fine but obviously concerned something is now missing - what's the function of this piece? Anything I need to do here? Thanks for any advice, google is giving me nothing on this one!

it is a hard steel roller intended to frustrate anyone trying to saw through the bolt

you can push it back in with a drop of glue to prevent it falling out.
