Hi

My Dad is trying to put up some new ceiling lights for me, but after taking off the old ones there doesn't appear to be an earth wire? There is a place on the terminal block for an earth wire, but nothing going into it. Does there need to be or can he just put the earth wire from new fitting into the space in the terminal block?

if there is no earth you can only use class 2 (double insulated - no earth needed) fittings. you might want to think about getting a PIR done on the wiring because it could be gettin fairly old

andrew2022 is saying if there is no earth the wiring may be very old and you should have an electrician in to check all the wiring and give you a report

I had same problem on my bathroom light the other day and found the earth wire had been terminated inside the T&E sleeve, peel the sleeve back a bit more you might be lucky (make my day).

The only trouble is that if the earth has been cut back and left unused at one end, there is no guarantee that the same has not been done at the other end....

A quick voltage check with a multimeter between live and earth will tell you whether or not thats the case... (and anyone who does not own one of these should buy one, if they plan to do electrical DIY)
