The in-laws want me to run a few slabs along the side of their hot tub. The tub stands on a concrete slab which is 150mm deep.

As I have learnt from this site the correct method would be to use a wacker plate to compact MOT Type 1 to a depth of around 75mm, however;

1/. Jewsons tell me they only sell MOT Type 1 in the big jumbo bags

2/. I can't justify hiring a wacker plate for just a few slabs

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

remove any vegetation and make sure your on solid bare earth. lay the slabs on a mortar bed on that. it will be fine for foot traffic.

Thanks Thermo,

but that means my mortar bed will be about 115mm deep (150mm - 35mm (depth of slab)?

Get some ballast bags from somewhere, mix it with some cement to make a dry mix, tread that in to build up the height first.
