hi can anyone help, we've had 3 so called plumbers out to try to figure out why our central heating keeps going off. sometimes it fires up straight away and other times we have got to go out and manually set the reset button. i know this isn't particularly clever but hey its cold out there, help!

some extra advice would be good.

make and model of oil boiler and also make/model of burner. is it combi? approx age

does it do it always frist thing? or at anytiem of day. have to checked your oil tank? have you ran out of oil lately? when was it last serviced?

Thanx for coming back. The burner is nearly 10 years old. I have not ran out of oil and we got things cleaned only last month and earlier last summer also. Its a Sterling 40St108. Type ST108 (Pl6-7-21-5-10)
Serial No. 485708 Manufacture was 1996.
The burner starts up only now and again but never with the timer set. It did start up automatically 2 hours ago but I have just gone out again to press the reset button. Would drive you nuts.
Anymore suggestions?
Thanks now.

I assume you know how it all works! The photo electric cell detects presence of flame. No flame it goes to lockout!
So is the 'cell' clean and positioned correctly to see the flame.
Are the 'cell' wires broken to cause open circuit.
This assembley can be removed and tested.

Does the pump have a solinoid? which uses a coil, which if faulty could be ok while cold but not when hot. test coil!

Is pump worn out? perhaps can't cope with low oil level in tank! check oil pressure to ensure it meets specification.

Is the nozzle blocked or dirty?
