    hi,

Was looking to update the lighting in the spare bedroom, & the shade I want comes complete with pendant fitting. Hadn't really looked at what was there already (had house 7 years) & first impressions weren't great - see photo.

Best guess is that someone wired a new cable into the old cable, maybe through a box of some kind, then stuck some tape over it. there's no screw in rose fitting to easily replace, & no idea of the vintage.

    Options are:

    1) Investigate the 'cable to a cable', if need be replace with a junction box & hang new light fitting that way (not a heavy light shade, but heavier than current one)
    2) Get a professional in to update the fitting.

My wallet says 1, but will go for 2 if it's a safety issue - any views appreciated!

Do you have access to the area above the ceiling ,is that the loft ?
If so ,it should be fairly easy to alter what you have now ,and fit your new light fitting.

Afraid not - old townhouse, that's the ground floor ceiling, someone else has the floor above, so I'd be coming in from below only.

hopefully! don't believe the rose is original, so replacing wouldn't be the end of the world. Just a PITA, as the height (~ 11'6'') makes too much exploration myself tricky.

    thx for responses

Just to highlight this post, so the op takes more notice...

It does look like there may be a plastic ceiling rose in the middle of the plaster ceiling rose, that has been covered with filler and paint.

Does the centre bit feel like hollow plastic?
