Hi, I have an old hot air heating thermostat on my wall. I don't have hot air heating anymore as it was replaced by a night storage heater. I would like to remove the thermostat as it looks unslightly. Can anyone tell me if i could just take it off the wall, put in a mounting box with a blank cover on (obviously insulating the bare wires inside)?
Thanks

check that the cable is disconnected at the other end, then fit a blank plate there.

Storage heaters are the work of the devil. A more sensible and MUCH more efficient (400%) option would have been to keep the hot air system, but retrofit a heat pump system into it.

HI Crafty, unfortunately the storage heater was there when moved in.

"check that the cable is disconnected at the other end, then fit a blank plate there." Where would the other end be? the consumer unit?

Appreciate your help

The Storage heater is on one wall- inset slightly with wooden back. The other side of the wall has a tunnel which i guess is the hot air heating.

The opposite side of the room (opposite to the sotrage heater) is where the thrmostat is.

(sorry if im confusing everyone)

There is a plate on the wall which has the wire from the storage heater goinginto it and a blank hole for another wire to go labelled fan, is this what you mean?

This storage heater - get it out of your mind. totally. It likely has nothing to do with the thermostat.

Turn off all your electricity and take the thermostat off the wall without disconnecting it. Look where the cable goes into the wall and trace it. While the electric is off, (and making sure in your mind that there is no power to this stat - a multimeter would be a handy thing to beg, borrow or steal here) you could take the thermostat off, note what wire goes to which terminal, and then put the wires into a row of terminal blocks. Put a blank on it, then turn the power on. If anything then doesn't work, then you know why and can re-instate the stat.

NO!! read my reply! lol

Yes it's official, I am truly lost now!

As I see it, old stat is for warm air heating system, entirely unrelated to the storage heaters.

Old warm air system must have been located somewhere. where is this somewhere? What might be an airing cupboard now? large larder cupboard in the kitchen?

My recommendation? Hang a picture over the old stat!

Hi Crafty, you basically said what i was thinking. There is only one set of wires going into the thermostat, so i assume its not part of the main circuit. There is power going to it (i have one of those pen things, i sound so hopeless!) so i will try and trace it through the wall to see where it goes.

Thank you all for your suggestion, much appreciated help

I love these "alterations" by previous tentants. I used to have a non-working stat in my hall way at my last flat, and above it was a 2gang switch, one gang of which operated my hall light, the other, nothing that I could see!

I always liked to imagine the other gang operating the upstairs flat's lounge or the like

flick flick flick - on off on

ahahahaha!

LOL that sounds just like my flat, ive had to have so much put right (trying to save money doing this myself!)

I think i may get Electrician back in.... I will have a go at the weekend and see what happens .... will let you know

Thanks guys
