Old wall, heavy tiles, Aquapanel ... way forward ?

Hi,

Old 1900's bathroom is being stripped for tiling with travertine tiles which are very heavy.

Old soft lime render on one wall has come off exposing bare brick, which is just as well, so now looking for way forward.
That particular wall will be showered against as the shower is in the bath.
I am thinking of battening the wall and then using Aquapanel and tiling on this.

Have just read that Aquapanel can be dot and dabbed and through fixed.
This would probably be easier than battening. Yes/No ?

Any issues, suggestions, or tips very welcome.

No you cannot dot and dab cement board. The gypsum based adhesive wont bond to the concrete. It also needs an air gap behind it to breath as it will absorb moisture.

if you use no more ply (not sure what other manufacturers state) you can dot and dab using flexible tile adhesive after priming the wall with SBR. i'd advise trough fixing too.

Dot and dab then drill through dabs and secure with screws.

Have a look at Marmox boards instead of the very heavy (and quite expensive) Aquapanel.

It can be put on brick walls with tile adhesive - should be full coverage really rather than dot-n-dab, or battens.

If you seal the joints with silicone it's supposed to be wet room tanking etc.

I am mid wet room, using 600x400 porcelain tiles on marmox boards, but with a Dural membrane tanking over. We used a combination of battens where we had space or stud on new wall and tile adhesive on the old brickwork.

Light weight of the marmox makes for an easy fit.

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated. We have now battened the wall with 2x1 tanalised and boarded with Aquapanel. This latter choice was because the very local builders merchant stocked it.
Main wall to be done was just 3 panels. All now very solid and tight so will press on with tiling.
Have more questions so will post appropriate questions.
