This is actually for my bike, but the 'car repair' thread is the closest.

I am trying to find an aluminium welder in Bristol who is happy to undertake a one-off repair job on my bike frame - It's a pretty tiny job - a bit of prep and about 2 inches of welding (but important to me!)

I have found lots of aluminium fabricators who specialist in various different fields, but they all only do contract work.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers
Mark

You could enquire of local garages, preferably non franchised back street type, you may find someone who can weld aluminium.

Maybe a motorcycle repair/service shop may be the best bet, worth enquiring with local welding companies too as they can sometimes have welders who can do ally.

Local vintage car clubs may know of someone. Land Rover specialists might know someone because of the ally bodies. Otherwise people who make special or "one off" anything. Chopper builders who make their own frames will have the gear for steel, and might have the know how for ally.

I can recommend Bowden Auto Engineering in Patchway. It's a proper machine shop and the owner is into his bikes. Known him years and he's very reliable. If he can't do it, he'll know someone who can.

Address: Redfield Rd, Patchway, Bristol, Avon BS34 6PJ

If you're still stuck after that come back to me. I know someone who customises Harleys and I can ask him who he uses.

I like your test card - spent the best part of 50 years staring at that.:)

Thanks Pete. Like the test card on the TV (only viewers of a certain age will remember), the one on my avatar is there until something more interesting comes along. Spent a lot of my childhood waiting for that noughts and crosses playing girl to disappear so I could watch Tales From The Riverbank or Mary, Mungo And Midge, etc, etc.

I remember the earlier test card from waiting for "Watch With Mother" in the late 50s. I remember that I thought it had some greater, hidden purpose more exciting than a test card! (If you see what I mean) :)

The one I remember most was in black and white and just had 'C' on it - 9" tubes and valves, much simpler than the modern stuff.

My dad was a TV engineer in the early days.
There's a plywood box here somewhere (If I still have it). neat job, spray painted, that once held a "set top box" to add itv onto a standard TV. (I think) He was making and selling them. He got in on the aerial thing later. Didn't really work out for him though.

Did the job all my working life, 1954 - 2004 don't understand it any more.

TVs have become overburdened with pointless functions, most of which I never use. As for TVs with an internet connection, well I've got a pc for that.

Remember when I was a kid and a friend had a Rediffusion dial on the wall next to the TV. Thought that was the height of technology. :D
