I plan to replace my ancient outside lights with something a bit more modern looking. Took a look at the wiring to the old lights and it wasn't really what I expected (and not just because of all the cobwebs!).

Is it normal that there appear to be 2 live, 2 neutral and 2 earth wires all going into the connector block?

Bear in mind that I have no experience so no idea what normal would be!

If there is more than one lamp, all controlled by the same switch, then yes. They all daisy chain together until you reach the last one which would only have the one cable.
